Range of examinations
Radiology generally plays a central role in the diagnosis and treatment of many cancers. In the vast majority of cancers, the initial diagnosis - in addition to the oncological examinations - must include a precise diagnosis of the spread of the disease using CT and/or MRI in order to characterize the disease more precisely and determine the stage of the disease.
Based on this, an optimal therapy recommendation for the treatment of cancer can be given. In the further course of treatment, CT and MRI can be used to assess the response of the disease to treatment, including drug therapies (e.g. chemotherapy, immunotherapy) or radiotherapy. In addition, after surgical or interventional treatment of a tumor, close radiological follow-up is essential to rule out recurrence.

Thanks to our close cooperation with the clinical departments of the ISAR Klinikum, we can also present patients and their findings to the interdisciplinary tumor board or the molecular tumor board of the ISAR Klinikum for a competent therapy recommendation on request. We are one of the few radiology practices to be certified as a cooperation partner of the Tumor Center Munich (TZM).
Interventional radiology
Interventional radiology is the therapeutic branch of radiology in which various imaging techniques are used to perform minimally invasive procedures in different parts of the body - without large incisions or surgery and usually under local anaesthetic. This means that many of these interventional procedures can be carried out as gentle alternatives to more complex operations or other invasive procedures.
In our practice network, interventional procedures are usually performed under CT guidance here in our Oncology Center at the ISAR Clinic. Thanks to the close cooperation with the local clinical departments, inpatient monitoring after the procedure and presentation to the interdisciplinary tumor board can be offered.
In the case of tumour diseases, the removal of a tissue sample (biopsy) from the affected organ is usually an important prerequisite for confirming the diagnosis and planning a precise and individualized therapy. With CT, tumor tissue can be removed in a targeted and gentle manner from almost all regions of the body. The tissue is then examined by our cooperating pathology practices and a precise diagnosis of the tumor tissue is carried out, including the determination of different tumor receptors if necessary. In cooperation with the clinical departments at ISAR Klinikum, modern next-generation sequencing (NGS) of the tumor tissue obtained by biopsy can also be offered on request. Patients and their findings can also be presented to the interdisciplinary tumor board or the molecular tumor board of the ISAR Klinikum for a therapy recommendation.
Inflammatory processes often lead to fluid accumulations or abscesses in the body, which then usually need to be removed or drained from the body. With CT-guided drainage, the interventional radiologist can precisely puncture these inflammatory fluid accumulations or abscesses and drain them out of the body with a thin drainage tube. In most cases, this can help to avoid the need for surgery.
In tumor ablation, tumors or metastases in various organs, e.g. liver, kidney or lung, can be treated minimally invasively using heat. The procedure is a gentle alternative to the often complex surgical removal of tumors. A probe is inserted into the tumor through a small skin incision under CT guidance by the interventional radiologist and the tumor is treated and destroyed by applying heat. No large incisions are necessary and usually only a short inpatient stay of 1-2 nights is required after the procedure.

In this area of expertise, we specialize in whole-body imaging and diagnostics, especially tumor and cancer diagnostics, including preventive examinations. Examinations in this area of expertise are well suited for a check-up, if there is a family history or if there is a desire for reassurance.
The whole-body imaging oncology competence area covers several locations and departments. Which location is suitable for you will be clarified in the preliminary discussions, during registration or by your family doctor.
The correct examination procedure is determined in consultation with the referring practice or clinic, depending on the problem and the region to be examined. We take care to select the most effective and gentle procedure in order to be able to make the correct diagnosis in a targeted manner.
Both computer tomography and radiation-free magnetic resonance imaging are suitable as cross-sectional imaging procedures for ruling out diseases or making quick, reliable diagnoses. In the event of an illness, the course of treatment can be assessed in detail using cross-sectional imaging diagnostics - this is crucial information for the doctors treating the patient.
Whole-body MRI enables radiation-free imaging of all regions of the body for preventive examinations as well as for specific questions about systemic diseases of the body. Our specialist in this field, Priv. Doz. Dr. med. Gerwin Schmidt, was involved in the introduction of whole-body MRI into clinical diagnostics with studies and research.
We have organized the competence area for oncological diagnostics and whole-body imaging across all locations. With our state-of-the-art magnetic resonance and computer tomography equipment as well as our nuclear medicine examination facilities, combined with concentrated know-how and practical experience, we are ideally equipped for oncological diagnostics.

Modern research method
Imaging is carried out using a state-of-the-art "double-head camera", which enables particularly fast and precise images of the organs. For the examination, a radiopharmaceutical is introduced into the body in extremely small quantities, which thus participates in the body's metabolism and serves as a contrast medium. In this way, metabolic processes in the living body can be examined.
